What is an NPU? The AI chip in new laptops, explained simply
An NPU (neural processing unit) is the part of your processor built to run AI tasks fast on little battery. What it does and whether you need one.
Quick answer
An NPU, or neural processing unit, is a small part of a modern processor designed only for AI tasks, such as blurring your webcam background, live captions or on-device image tools. It does this kind of math faster and with far less power than the main processor (CPU) or graphics chip (GPU). Windows Copilot+ PCs need an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more.
NPU in one sentence
An NPU (neural processing unit) is a specialist part of a computer chip that runs artificial intelligence tasks quickly while using very little power.
You will now see NPUs in most new laptops and phones. Intel, AMD and Qualcomm build them into their latest processors, and Apple calls its version the Neural Engine.
CPU, GPU and NPU: who does what?
Think of the three parts of a modern chip as three workers with different skills.
| Part | Good at | Example jobs |
|---|---|---|
| CPU (central processing unit) | Doing many different tasks, one step after another | Opening apps, running Windows or macOS, web pages |
| GPU (graphics processing unit) | Doing thousands of similar calculations at once | Games, video editing, 3D, large AI models |
| NPU (neural processing unit) | The specific math AI models use, at very low power | Webcam background blur, noise removal, live captions, on-device AI features |
A CPU can run AI, and a GPU is often faster at it. The NPU’s advantage is efficiency: it can run small AI tasks in the background for hours without draining your battery or spinning up the fans.
What does an NPU actually do for you?
Everyday examples include:
- Video calls: blurring your background, keeping you centered in frame and removing keyboard noise.
- Accessibility: live captions and translation of audio playing on your computer.
- Photos: finding people and objects in your photo library, or removing objects from images.
- Operating system AI features: Windows Copilot+ PC features and Apple Intelligence features that run on the device instead of in the cloud.
Because these run on your device, some of them work offline and keep your data on your computer.
What is TOPS, and why 40?
NPU speed is usually measured in TOPS, or trillions of operations per second. When Microsoft introduced Copilot+ PCs in 2024, it required an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more. That is why some laptops with NPUs still are not Copilot+ PCs: their NPU is slower than the threshold.
Treat TOPS like horsepower in a car advert. It is useful for comparing, but real-world results also depend on memory, software and how well apps use the chip.
Does an NPU make ChatGPT faster?
No. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and the AI tools on Zron Tech run on powerful servers in data centers. Your laptop only sends text and shows the answer, so they work the same on a five-year-old computer. NPUs matter for AI that runs locally on your device.
Should you buy a laptop with an NPU?
- Buying a new laptop in 2026? You will get an NPU almost automatically, so it is not something you need to hunt for.
- Want Windows Copilot+ features such as Recall, Cocreator or improved Windows Studio Effects? Check for the Copilot+ PC label (40+ TOPS).
- Mainly browse, write and study? Memory (RAM), screen quality and battery life matter more. See our guide to the best laptops for students.
The bottom line
An NPU is a battery-friendly helper for AI features on your device. It is nice to have and increasingly standard, but it is not a reason on its own to replace a laptop that still works well for you.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an NPU in my next laptop?
Not necessarily. Most AI tools people use today, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or our AI tools, run in the cloud and work on any computer. An NPU helps with on-device features like Windows Studio Effects, Recall and offline AI apps, and it can save battery while they run.
What does TOPS mean?
TOPS means trillions of operations per second. It is a rough measure of how much AI math a chip can do. Higher is better, but it does not tell you everything about real-world speed.
Do Macs have NPUs?
Yes. Apple calls it the Neural Engine. Every Apple silicon Mac, including the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air with M5, has a 16-core Neural Engine.
