About the Unit Converter

The Unit Converter switches between metric, imperial and digital units instantly. It includes both decimal (GB) and binary (GiB) storage units, which explains why a new drive shows less space than advertised.

How to use it

  1. Choose a category such as Length or Data storage.
  2. Type a value and choose the units to convert from and to.
  3. Read the result. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion.

Example

A "1 TB" drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which Windows shows as about 931 GiB.

Questions people ask

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB in Windows?

Drive makers use decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). Windows counts in binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) but labels them GB. Both describe the same space.
